Integrated use of Neem and Sea Algae in eco-freindly management of crop pests

TePP innovator, R.Augustine successfully developed and demonstrated `SEAMIC' which is a combination of Neem kernel extract, Seaweed extract and Potassium Humate. The product was successfully tested on Brinjal, Grape,paddy,groundnut,onion crops.

Software Institute for Rural Development

Areca nut Cleaner Cum Polisher


Peeling of areca nut is one of the labour intensive process. This task is mainly carried out by ladies in the village. Areca nuts are harvested in different methods as well as different ripped conditions of the nut. Green areca nut is harvested after 80 to 90 days of maturity. In one bunch there will be several nuts some are more matured, few are under matured. Usually 10 to 15 % of the harvest will be over matured. Peeling of the over matured is very difficult by hand. Instead of peeling they scrap the outer skin by using sharp knife. This scraped one is usually called as ketta gotu. These scrapped ones are boiled and then dried. After drying these are once again scrapped by using knife and then sorted according to the quality. Market rate for this variety is always 40 to 30 % of the finest variety of the areca nut. Rains during the harvest season will enhance the quantity of the ketta gotu as the processing of the areca nut will be stopped and it will be allowed to over mature and then dried. When these nuts are peeled they will have white coat on the surface and more often outer skin can not be cleaned completely. They need further processing before sending it to the market.
In addition to peeling of the green areca nut peeling of red areca nut also carried out. This task of peeling of red areca nut is very tedious one and complete removal of shell is impossible one. This semi peeled one is further processed in traditional manner and dried. This product is generally called as kettagotu /Gorubulu and goes to the market at nearly ¼ to 1/6th rate of the normal areca nut. This is mainly due to shape and also adherence of the parts of outer shell.
These kettagotu / gorubulu is further processed at market by scrapping individual nut by using knife. This is mainly done by ladies and children. They are paid at Rs. 3.00 per 5 kg and normally one will do about 20 kg in a day.
This problem has been observed by Shylaja Vittala and found that there is need a for mechanization in this part of the process so that value can be added to the areca nut. Developing machine was very difficult one as machine should address following points:
1. Areca nut is delicate one in its dried state and will brakes in to pieces after processed in
mechines.
2. Only outer parts of shell should be removed.
3. weight loss should be minimum
4. Machine applications should be easy so that even it can be handled by the ladies.
Keeping above requirement of the market Dharma Polisher has been developed over a period of three years of R&D. Dharma polisher is addressed all the above requirements and also handling capacities. Product has been test marketed and found good response from the users. The product has been sold in may parts of the chitradurga, shivamoga, arasikere.

Students club for augmenting innovation

"Students' Club for Augmenting Innovations (SCAI) at grassroots" is a body of students from India's management and technological institutes. National Innovation Foundation (NIF) is encouraging students to set up SCAI chapters at various schools, colleges and universities in order to provide Product Development, Business Development (setting up of ventures), Mentoring and Monitoring support to entrepreneurs/innovators/traditional knowledge holders at grassroots level in the country.

Each educational institution shall have a student coordinator and a faculty coordinator to start with. The student coordinator shall be given the right to select his/her core committee and build up a SCAI chapter for his/her institution. The members may be from the first year or the second year. The student coordinator upon his/her selection/election/nomination will be required to submit a detailed Statement of Purpose (SoP) enlisting his vision for SCAI, expected areas of activities/involvement, learning involved, expectations from NIF, succession plans, skills of entrepreneurship exhibited in past, etc. ....read on

Water filtering tricycle

Google (GOOG), the search giant turned green energy disruptor, has announced the winner in their fatalistically named “Innovate or Die Pedal-Powered Machine Challenge,” . Co-sponsored with bicycle-maker Specialized, the contest asked cycling grease monkeys to make “clean” pedal power work in new and innovative ways.

The winner is Team Aquaduct for their water-filtering tricycle that could help solve water quality issues in the developing world. Designed to hold enough water for a family of four, the Aquaduct filters water while the rider pedals. Using a clutch attached to an idler pulley, the rear wheels can be disengaged so that water can be filtered while the bike is stationary. The team of five engineers who designed and built it will be taking home $5,000 and a couple of Specialized bikes as their prize.

Rural Business Hubs

Ministry of Panchayat Raj invites proposals for setting up Rural Business Hubs. This fund can be accessed for bridging critical gaps in local infrastructure like common facilities / pooling centres for farm products/minor equipment/ connectivity, etc.For raising plantations with long gestation period, labour compensation for preyielding phase can be supported. Ideally suited activities are those where production is decentralised (production by masses). Direct marketing of agri-produce, sourcing of fruit and vegetable, food processing, floriculture, Jatropha / bio-diesel crops, handloom, handicrafts, bio-mass based power generation, etc. can been taken up.

TePP supports innovations and RBH supports technology diffusion. TUCs can apply to set up RBH.

Dignity Toilet



Humanitarian International Design Organization(HIDO) International Design Award was granted for their ground-breaking ‘Dignity Toilet’, a portable sanitation solution ideal for refugee camps and developing countries. Cooler Solutions developed this unique design as a part of their focus on sustainable product solutions. The dignity toilet is a solid waste storage and disposal system for locations where a sanitation infrastructure does not exist. It addresses the issues of sanitation compliance, health and personal dignity. The Dignity Toilet provides sanitary storage for solid waste for four people for approximately 7 – 10 days. After that period, the toilet is removed from its dock and taken to a controlled area. It’s then manually augered into the soil where it evacuates its contents, mixes the waste with soil and buries it in the ground for decomposition. Mike lovelss and Terence woodside were the designers from Canada.

Other interesting design is water less self sufficient toilet by Mauro Mufatti of Italy.

Flowering Innovation at trec-step

Highlights of some innovations incubated at trec-step have been provided by Sri RMP Jawahar.

Mr. Karthikeyan is a young incubatee entrepreneur who is now working on array digital X ray technology. He is planning to bring down the cost of Digital X Ray machines and C arms, from minimum of Rs 25 lakhs to Rs 5 lakhs, while substantially improving quality and eco-benefits. The quality of results achieved so far, has been greatly appreciated by orthopedics.

Mr. Malaravan is working on Rice Sorter which shall remove coloured (black and brown) rice and improve the price of per kg by Rs 1. Though some Japanese and Korean Machines are available in the market, he is developing a better throughput machine with higher quality sorting. This done by improved design of sorting process by using enhanced PCB Cameras, eliminating multiple processing, high response pneumatic solenoid valve and specially designed nozzles for separating the impurities etc.

The Julie Flora ( Karu Velam in Tamil, Babool Tree in Hindi) is a firewood tree in dry lands across India. After collecting the thicker stems and branches for fire wood, the farmers leave the wastaes which contain thorns and small branches in the land itself which is then burnt openly causing pollution. Now an Engineer Mr.Kannappan and a farmer Mr.Paneerselvam came together and they have designed and fabricated a tractor mounted pulverizer for collecting these cut wastes which is sold to open biomass power plants and open market like hot cakes. The cut wastes have better calorific value since the thorns have higher volatile material and also nearly two thirds of the fire woods wastes have been collected back.

Transforming kinetic energy caused by rumbling machines into electrical energy

Several proposals are received under TePP to convert kinetic energy into electrical energy. Except few cases, most of such proposals were not supported, considering the engineering challenges. It is interesting to note that parallel efforts in UK has brought out commercial product called micro generators. The PMG17 microgenerators are intended for use on machinery driven by AC motors and harvest the commonly-found "twice-line-frequency" vibration. Even with as little as 25mg (RMS) vibration within a 2Hz bandwidth, they will always produce a minimum power of 0.5mW, while delivering up to 40mW when there is more vibration available. Powering wireless sensor nodes is one industrial application.

Solar bottle

This years Index awards include `solar bottle'.
One sixth of the world's population has no access to safe drinking water, increasing their risk of waterborne diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, typhoid fever, Hepatitis A and dysentery.When attending an exhibition under the theme “H2O” at Milan's International Furniture Fair, Designers Alberto Meda and Francisco Gomez Paz learned about the SODIS system, a simple, low-cost solution for treating drinking water at a household level. Contaminated water is filled into transparent plastic bottles. When exposed to full sunlight for six hours, the pathogens in the water are destroyed.
Meda and Paz decided to design a container that brings the best out of the SODIS system, and the result is Solar Bottle, which has one transparent face for UV-A + infrared rays collection and one aluminium color to increase the reflections. The high ratio surface/thickness of the low cost four liter container improves the performance of solar disinfection and its flat shape makes it stackable and facilitates storage. A handle makes it possible to regulate the angle for best solar exposition and ensures easy transportation.

Acharya Nagarjuna University was inaugurated on 11th September 1976 by the then President of India Shri Fakruddin Ali Ahmed. The University caters to the higher educational needs of Prakasam, Guntur and Krishna Districts of Andhra Pradesh. The University has grown by leaps and bounds to the present level due to the efforts of successive Vice-Chancellors. Today Acharya Nagarjuna University is one of the highly acclaimed universities in India. It has more than 375 affiliated colleges, two PG campuses at Nuzvid and Ongole apart from the University campus at Nagarjuna Nagar. It offers about 60 regular courses and about 100 distance education programme. The University has bestowed its attention on development of infrastructure in the recent past and is expanding it to meet the current needs. Many firsts are being created.

Metamorphosis at ISB

Innovators of North East exhibition 8t to 10th August 2007

An exhibition will be organized at NEDFi-Haat, Ambari, Guwahati from 8 th to 10th August, 07 to showcase the innovations made by the Grassroots Innovators of the North East. The exhibition is being jointly organized by NEDFi, Rural Technology Action Group based in IIT, Guwahati and GIAN-NE. The aim of the exhibition is to create awareness and promote commercialization of the products developed by these innovators. The exhibition will be inaugurated by Sri Pradyut Bordoloi, Hon'ble Minister for Industries & Commerce, Power, Public Enterprises, Govt. of Assam at 12.30 p.m. on 8th August,07. The exhibition will remain open from 10.00 a.m. to 7.00 p.m. on the other two days.

Creative mind is not bonded to some segments of population is once again demonstrated with a socially useful innovation by Balakrishna of Tamilnadu , whose family once worked as bonded labourers. His innovation of power generation using slow moving water has won him many admirers.

Ashden awards 2007 for sustainable enrgy

This years winners include SELCO,BIOTECH, SKG Sangha from India. SELCO showed the way for diffusion of solar lamps with a sustainable commercial model with over 70,000 installations, mostly by street vendors. BIOTECH showed the way to use food waste thrown into the streets for producing cooking gas, with an installation base of 12,000 domestic plants. SKG Sangha demonstrated utility of bio gas plant slurry as fertiliser by combining the slurry with straw and leaves and then adding worms which re-digest the mixture to produce vermicompost.

Research grants for Sustainable sanitation

IFS/ SIDA invites proposals for sustainable sanitation and grey-water reuse in developing countries. One major component of the global water crisis is the contamination of drinking water supplies with human faeces. The future puts new demands on sanitation solutions as conventional sanitary approaches including the “water based flush sanitation” create serious environmental problems. A promising solution is instead offered through “dry, urine-separating sanitation”. This method is water saving and recycles nutrients back to agriculture, why it is often referred to as ecological sanitation (or “ecosan”).

Sustainable sanitation also includes the reuse of grey-water. Grey-water is identified as the waste water generated in households, excluding the water containing human excreta or urine, but including water from kitchens, bathrooms and washing rooms. Such water can be used as source for additional supplies of water available for irrigation and it often contains the necessary nutrients. In dry regions of the world such waste water is very important, thus treated waste water is already being used for crop production in most peri-urban areas of the developing world.

Chinese farmer inventor Wang Heng

Global GIAN was inaugurated by Wang Heng, an outstanding farmer innovator. As a poor & hungry person, it pained him to see people using food grains (beans) to plug the leaks in roofs. With 23 years of efforts, he created a waterproof cement-like material, which becomes solid in six seconds when mixed with water. This material has been widely used in key construction projects, including a Beijing subway station, Beijing-Kowloon railway and the Three Gorges Dam. His waterproof technology was also introduced to other countries such as Bangladesh, the Republic of Korea and Morocco.

Grass root innovators go global

Gupta is the Kasturbhai Lalbhai Chair in Entrepreneurship at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, the co-ordinator, SRISTI and Honey Bee Network, and the Executive Vice Chair, National Innovation Foundation (India).Honey Bee network has facilitated over last two decades people to people learning to learn from existing solutions and explore collaborative solutions to the ones not solved as yet. These grassroots innovations developed by common people unaided from outside, can extend the frontiers of science in some cases and make new applications apparent which may have been ignored for long.Participants of the International Conference on Global GIAN ( Grassroots Innovation Augmentation Network) from Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, Canada and America met at Tianjin , May31-2, 2007 to launch an online platform to recognize, respect and reward green grassroots innovators and traditional knowledge holders.

I was recently in a tribal area of Meghalaya, and was completely stunned by the ingenuity of the indigenous people who have "trained" living roots of a species of rubber tree (Ficus elastica, we were told) to form bridges, complete with railings, over small, but fast flowing, mountain streams. In brief, this species of rubber tree has lateral roots that emerge from the trunk (above the ground) and can grow laterally for some distance before hitting the ground. Khasi tibals have been using hollowed out betel nut trunks/branches as guiding channels in which young live roots of the rubber tree (still attached to the trunk) are allowed to grow for years. The channels are used to direct the roots in specific directions across the mountain streams, and also to form railing-like support structures to help a person hold on to when walking on the roots.

Once a few roots have been successfully channelized to grow in the desired direction, it is easy to have other roots grow in the same direction by using the earlier roots as support structures and guides. The process apparently takes 25 to 30 years for a set of roots to cross the river and hit the ground on the other bank, and become strong enough to take the load of a few human beings. So this is indeed testimony to the patience and conviction of the Khasi tribal people -- waiting for 25 to 30 years to build a masterpiece of bio-engineering. Once the bridge is formed, it only grows in strength over years, as the roots thicken and further fresh roots join the bridge.

Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Small Industries (CGTSI)

Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Small Industries (CGTSI) was set up by GOI and SIDBI.The Guarantee scheme seeks to assure the lender that, in the event of an SSI unit, which availed collateral free credit facilities, failing to discharge its liabilities to the lender, the Guarantee Trust would make good the loss incurred by the lender up to 75 per cent of the credit facility. The scheme is initially confined to guaranteeing of loans extended by all scheduled commercial banks and specified Regional Rural Banks, NSIC, NEDFi, SIDBI, which have entered into an agreement with the Guarantee Trust for the purpose. New as well as existing SSI units engaged in manufacturing activities or in IT and software industry or Small Scale Service & Business (Industry Related) Enterprises (SSSBEs ) are eligible for support.

Jaathiya Grameena Pragathi Pradarshana

A group of enterprising villagers in and around Karamchedu, in association with the Federation of Farmers Association, Honey Bee, A.P. and National Innovation Foundation, Ahmedabad propose to hold a ‘JAATHIYA GRAMEENA PRAGATHI PRADARSHANA’, the first-of-its-kind in the country being organized at the village level. This exhibition seeks to address a myriad of issues ranging from increasing agricultural yields through the usage of modern implements to the conservation of water, energy and the usage of organic manure. The farmers, rural artisans and occupational groups from different states in the country would participate in this exhibition not only with a view to improve their economic conditions but will also exhibit their talents in order to safeguard and restore the traditional heritage of rural villages. Megabucks

Megabucks is an `Annual business and entrepreneurship festival' organised by SIDBI Innovation and Incubation Centre (SIIC) of IIT, Kanpur. SIIC is also TePP outreach centre. The event, this time included a workshop on innovations, attended by grass root innovators, students, faculty and incubating firms. TePP team from Delhi interacted with innovators and visited innovation exhibition. Several TePP supported innovators also participated in the exhibition.
